Lunch at The Botanist

So we had lunch at this shophouse-styled cafe named The Botanist, which we saw when we had our desserts at Epiphyte. Another garden-theme cafe, it has alfresco seating at level 1 and indoor seating at level 2. The alfresco seating offers a more laidback kind of vibes but we were perspiring like mad after a while. But it is IG-worthy.

Helmed by the same team for Pacamara Boutique Coffe Roasters, their coffee is a must-try, and reasonably-priced at $5.

Their shakshuka (baked eggs) is priced at $19. One of the better tasting baked eggs that I have tasted recently. The best thing is that there’s no additional service charge or GST and the price you see is nett.

 

 

At their side door, there’s wall art which (needless to say) attracted a lot of people to take their OOTDs. And that includes us! haha.

Antoinette Queen’s Castella Cake

Castella cake fans, anyone?

Jumping on to the latest castella cake bandwagon, Antoinette  has launched its Queen’s castella cake collection. Consisting of 6 flavours- Ondeh Ondeh, Vanilla, Vanilla Cheese, Earl Grey, Earl Grey Cheese, Nutella. Only managed to try Vanilla Cheese and Earl Grey Cheese as the rest were sold out at Penhas outlet.

Comparing to Le Castella cake, it is less bouncier and minimal spongy-feel. But the texture of the cake was better and my folks actually preferred this. Got the Vanilla Cheese at $11 and Earl Grey Cheese at $15 (before GST). The price for its plain Vanilla is the cheapest at $8. Worth it in my opinion.

I would definitely try these flavours again but not before I try ondeh ondeh and Nutella. What’s your take on Antoinette’s modern twist on its castella cake?

April’s Bakery

Seems like Tampines neighbourhood has a lot of awesome food offerings now. The recent opening of April’s Bakery, gives us the chance to taste the awesome Bangkok Cantonese-style pies at affordable price. Think Hong Kong “wife’s biscuit” and you’ll get the drift. It has flaky crust and abundance of filling in it. There’s many flavours to choose from as well!

It’s located among one of the stores outside Tampines mrt station, beside Umi Sushi.

 

My bro and I were there around 8pm so most of the pies were sold out and we were left with 5 flavours to try. We were gobbling down the pies and didn’t have much chance to take much decent photos haha.

The 5 flavours we bought were – Thai green tea, sesame, red bean, Thai milk tea, pumpkin.
My personal take is that Thai milk tea is worth the try. Though my family prefers pumpkin and sesame. You can skip red bean and green tea.
Bro just came home with 3 more flavours to try – taro, Tokyo banana custard, sweet egg floss.
It comes with a box if you buy 5 pieces. If not , it’s put in this small paper pockets.
My mum’s first boomerang attempt after cutting this sweet egg floss.

My dad keep asking me to take his version of boomerang haha.
Verdict – Taro and Tokyo banana custard is a must-try!

Look at the yummy ginkgo nut in the taro pie. :p
If you happen to be around the East side, do drop by early and try them!

Le Castella Cake at Tampines One

Le Castella Cake 古早味蛋糕

No, I didn’t queue at all to buy this or waited 3 hours. I was around Tampines area and happened to drop by to see what was all the hype about it and sure enough, there were people hovering around to wait to place their order at the next available timing. Literally standing there waiting for 4.00pm to come and I was there at 3.15pm.

So I checked with the guy at the counter how does this work and he said order to be placed at 4pm, which was the next available timing and had to wait while the cakes are being baked. Being a foodie, I wanna try this Japanese sponge cake and decided to try my luck at the cashier and asked if there’s any available cakes for me to buy. And thankfully, there’s cheese version available for me to buy! Today is my lucky day haha. Can’t believe I got it fresh from the oven!

They have original and cheese version (and upcoming chocolate) and are priced $9.90 and $11.90 respectively. They keep having fresh batches out and you can see the smoke coming out while they cut it. And the cake jiggles!

And after I have gotten it, I grabbed home immediately (thank you Grab for your promo code) and my parents and I feasted on it while it’s still piping hot.

   

My verdict: I’m a great fan of all things buttery. This cheese version enhances the taste of the cake because the buttery taste was not as much as I wanted it to be. Comparing to a normal butter cake from a Neighbourhood bakery store, the buttery taste can be more flavourful. I’m not sure how the original version will fare if there’s no cheese inside though. In terms of texture, I like the softness and the crust of it. I would recommend to try this as soon as its out from the oven to complete the overall eating experience. The after taste of it is alright, not too heaty like what some butter cakes can cause one to feel. Perhaps they can consider having a cafe for this? It goes well with a cup of tea/coffee and customers can enjoy it while it’s piping hot.

Marble Bistro – A hidden gem in Everton Park

So my partner in crime jio me to this place for some fine food. Located at Everton Park, this bistro oozes a cozy yet quaint feel in this Neighbourhood. Of course as its name suggest, the cafe is decked in marble decor.

  

We had the dinner 7 course tasting set at $38 and their starter was a delicacy – mushroom macchiato. It’s rich in mushroom essence with truffle foam and it’s definitely a fave among mushroom lovers.

The kueh pie tee has crab filings that leave you wanting for 1 more of it.
 
The prawn pot noodles with the onsen egg was flavourful. It contains bacon bits and dried seaweed, before that the waiter kindly poured this tsuyu broth into it.
I had their pork jowl while bestie had beef flank steak. Steak was tender but I prefer the pork jowl anytime with its rich and succulent taste and texture.
The dessert was chocolate brownie with fig and manaka honey ice cream. Thumbs up!
